She said hello and really meant it, As the sun was coming up, And then she gave to me her speciality In a multicoloured cup On Cally Road she stole my heart On Cally Road she stole my heart On Cally Road she stole my heart Away What can I get you, she said smiling In the golden morning light I’d like to see you again, And I’m not bothered when Good choice she said, tonight? Well I can’t make that I said laughing As my food came into view Well the offer was there She said, touching her hair That’s a fiver that you owe me too

Photons, gluons and quarks Measons. Energy and Sparks Things that light up in the dark That’s what you do to my heart 11000 times a second Paul Dirac was a clever man A man who had a dream That things were not Quite as he thought Life was not what it seemed That just below the radar A magic universe A tiny, tiny world of energy Where worlds could be Or move, off course A Lilliputian micro cosmic force 11000 times a second Paul Dirac was a quiet man He lived outside his head He saw that our Reality Was just a cosmic hologram instead That just below our radar Another universe An anti-matter cosmic eulogy Where worlds were from A deeper source A Lilliputian energetic force 11000 times a second Photons, gluons and quarks Measons. Energy and sparks Things that light up in the dark That’s what you do to my heart. 11000 times a second

There is no morality, they say, there is no beauty. There is no insanity, they say, there is no duty. There is only what you do, and what I say There is no right or wrong, no scream or song, There is no good to do, or good to say. Just pumping blood, surviving every day. There is no identity, they say, there is no season, There is no democracy, they say, there is no reason. There is no hypocrisy, they say, there is no caring. There is no equality, they say, there is no sharing. There is no society, they say, there is no being. There is no integrity, they say, there is no seeing.

Her smile it will entrance you Her intellect enhance you Her flattery embrace And don’t forget her walk or face She’ll hold your hand like ‘Mother’, But soon you will discover That Mother was Superior And you are so inferior Beware the Ides of March She’ll stab you in the back Put you on the rack And lie with your best friend Beware the Ides of March She’ll put you out to grass Wait for time to pass And lie with your best friend Her style begets her fashion, Her viciousness, her passion, Her soft and shapely frontal curve Has little point ‘cept to disturb You won’t forget her perfume The silence of her bedroom She’ll try to make a truce Around your neck just like a noose Beware the Ides of March She’ll minimise your stats Feed you to the rats And lie with your best friend Beware the Ides of March She’ll dramatise her love Fit you like a glove And lie with your best friend She’ll tempt you with a promise Confuse you with a premise Allure you with a coup de grace To demonstrate how weak you are She’ll spit you out in pieces Then iron out the creases She’ll cry that you are cruel to her Then walk around in blood-soaked fur Beware the Ides of March She’ll work to undermine Say that you are fine Then lie with your best friend Beware the Ides of March She’ll laugh behind your back That you don’t have the knack And lie with your best friend Relying on her beauty She’ll never do her duty Excite you with her clever art And then expose your shattered heart And tortured by her vanity You’ll question your own sanity But in the end you’ll never win She’ll laugh and put you in the bin Beware the Ides Of March She’ll stab you in the back Put you on the rack And lie with your best friend Beware the Ides of March She’ll put you out to grass Wait for time to pass And lie with your best friend

In violet hills The Shadows fill The road and dusty draw Near steamy lakes The guns exploit Their grim industrial roar The RPG The IED The drugs of choice for war While learned men From miles away Attempt to keep the score But you are only Man You are only Man Yeah you are only Man I’m Af-ghan-I-stan The snowy peaks And watery creeks Turn desert into field While Soviet chiefs Express beliefs That ancient tribes will yield Yet in Kabul The mortuary’s full The futures fate is sealed While learned men From miles away Pretend his war is healed Your brothers And your fathers Have passed this way before In Helmand And in Kandahar To loose the dogs of war These brave men tried And many died If final proof were needed I am no place For brave young men My warnings are not heeded

It was another world, A million years ago When we were young, And summer days passed slow I’m reading Cassady, She’s into Greg Corso It was another world, A Million years ago It was another world, A thousand years ago When we were serious And sometime feeling low I’m into travelling She’s into I don’t know It was another world A thousand years ago Do you know the bridge near Newnham Do you know the place I mean? Did you swim there in mid-summer And lay naked on the green? It was another world A hundred years ago When we were orbiting Two people just for show I’m into Morrissey She’s into Suduko It was another world A hundred years ago It was another world just ten years ago When we were daggers drawn And our respect zero I’m into cinema She’s into French Pernod It was another world Just ten years ago Do you know the bridge near Newnham Do you know the place I mean? Do you swim there in mid-summer And lay naked on the green? Now it’s another world, a million years too late I got my vision back, but I was tempting fate I realised my flaw, by then she’d closed the gate It was another world, a million years too late Do you know the bridge near Newnham Do you know the place I mean? Did you swim there in mid-summer And lay naked on the green?

My love, come and sit by my side My love, see the stars in your eyes All things will end in the cycle of life All things will pass All things will form Tomorrow is the future And come the next day And come the next day Tomorrow is the future My love, let us dance in the dawn My love, as the music plays on And granite is soft to the blade of the knife My love, here a promise I make My love, and an oath that take That the eagle will fly with the dove in the night

Things are turning toxic Things are turning so strange Reality is warping My heart is moving out of range I’m losing ground With what we’ve had to date I go inside myself I should try more to relate I find it difficult To care, or to equate I don’t think the medication’s Working I’m on my own That’s the way it needs to be You try so hard But I just need to be free I’m just not good At trading you for me I don’t think analysis is Working We need the Space. But the clock is on us now It’s just Entanglement That’s the theory anyhow I get this memory lapse That you’ll have to disallow I don’t think this therapy is Working

I’m gonna take myself to Monaco To Juarez or Turin To stupas around Kathmandu To face the place we’re in I’m tired of your sly regard For things to me belong This has been too bad This has been too bad This has been too bad For far too, far too long Embarrassed by this compromise That’s been in place for years I’m tempted just to jettison These dark primeval fears I’ve traded all my dignity So evidently wrong This has been too bad This has been too bad This has been too bad For far too, far too long I challenge you with due regard You’ve been a friend to me But plans are not spontaneous Imprisoning the free Contaminated overtures And suicide headlong This has been too bad This has been too bad This has been too bad For far too, far too long You seem to like it as it is Emotional and torn Because it’s been that way for you From the day that you were born But I won’t take the blame for that I need another song This has been too bad This has been too bad This has been too bad For far too, far too long

I saw you last night in New York Crossed over the road to say ”hi” I knew it was you by the way that you walk By the gold of your hair and the blue of your eye I saw you last night in New York I heard you last week in New York In a bar where a Fado was playing I knew it was you by the way that you stood By the curl of your smile and the words you were saying I heard you last week in New York I touched you last month in New York In the wind crying down from the East Side I knew it was you, that caress on my skin Calmed the state I was in, every hour of that day I touched you last month in New York I sensed you last year in New York Your perfume, essential and thrilling I knew it was you by the ring in your laugh By the glance at your watch and the time you were killing I sensed you last year in New York I saw you last night in New York Crossed over the road to say “hi” But the face that was there gave a quizzical stare Was polite but unknown, so I just walked on by .....

It’s so sad but you’re to blame Our love can never be the same Your mouth spits fire without respite It’s like you’re sick and full of fight Down the highway, down the track I’m leaving and I won’t be back I can take the usual stuff But this mutation’s quite enough It’s not like me to be roughshod So I’m outta here I swear to God It’s so sad, I’m at a loss ‘Bout what it is that makes you cross Anything can just backfire Light touch paper and retire It’s so sad, but as a rule It don’t take much to make you cruel The wall between us is so high I’ll climb the thing and say goodbye It’s not like me to be roughshod So I’m outta here I swear to God

about

Discern the Times is a collection of brand new material from Bob Hughes, played and arranged by Colin Cripps, although this time with instrumental help from Mary Humphries and vocal support from Rob Hughes (who also greatly contributed to the vocal sound on Breakfast) and Alan Buxton.

The collection is very eclectic in style and subject, but continues the almost unique positioning between what someone has described as “beautiful tunes” and “serious lyrics”, a kind of contradictory juxtaposition, reflecting a lot of what life really is for most of us, some good, but also some bad.

The songs not only reflect the wonder of life, but also navigate the utter despair we can feel when things, like our relationships, go wrong.

We hope you will find Discern the Times both thought provoking, and beautiful.

For Discern the Times you can have an immediate download of an 11- track album in your choice of 320k mp3, FLAC, or just about any other format you could want.

Download the full album to receive a free bonus, printable, 12 page lyrics booklet, CD cover art and box insert together with printing instructions.
